“Leo, this is Mr. Miller. He was mommy’s friend a long time ago.”
“Just James, please,” he said, crouching down to Leo’s level. “Nice to meet you, Leo. I like your dinosaur backpack.”
Leo, disarmed by the attention to his favorite thing, gave a small smile. “It has a T-Rex.”
“The best kind,”James said solemnly, standing back up. His gaze returned to me, still amazed. “You look… you look exactly the same, Maya.”
I let out a short laugh, self-consciously tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. I felt anything but the same. “I doubt that. But you look great, James. What are you doing here?”
