I shake my head, trying to push the thoughts away, but they cling to me like a shadow.
Ahead of me, a man approaches. He’s tall and broad-shouldered, with a scruffy beard and kind eyes that crinkle when he smiles. There’s something familiar about him, though I can’t place it.
“Hey,” I say, forcing a small smile.
“Hello,” he replies, his voice warm and friendly. “You look so familiar…”
My heart skips a beat. “I do?”
“Yes, you really do,” he says, studying me intently.
“I don’t remember much,” I admit. “You can call me Jane for now. I don’t really remember my name.”
