The sheer volume of thought and imagination contained in this room deserved respect. I climbed the stairs to Bronte and pulled out the first edition of Jane Eyre. I held the book like a fragile chick. Looking around, hoping against all odds he had, I spotted a window seat. There were even curtains covered with tape. I walked past Clive and Russell, who were discussing a vampire party visiting the city, and climbed onto the windowsill, drawing the curtains. The seat was the size of a double bed, with cushions and cushions. The heavy curtains muffled the voices of the men.

I knew who it was from the second I saw it, my heart did a traitorous flip as I carried it upstairs, glancing over my shoulder like Mirabel might appear at any moment. I slipped into our room, locked the door, and tore it open on my bed. Inside was a small wooden box. Nestled in velvet lay a rare first-edition copy of Jane Eyre, the cover worn but beautiful, it pages edged in gold. My breath caught. I’d mentioned it once during the holidays, of how it was my ultimate book boyfriend fantasy in physical form. Rhys had remembered. I opened it carefully. Tucked inside the front cover was a handwritten note on heavy cream paper, his strong, decisive script unmistakable.

Jane had excused herself to use the bathroom, leaving us standing outside. I turned to Reed. He was grinning from ear to ear, ice cream smeared on his nose. “You really like it, don't you?” I asked, a small smile tugging at my lips. He nodded, his eyes bright. “It's really good.” We were waiting for Jane when a group of girls passed by. Their eyes landed on me, then on Reed, and their expressions twisted with disgust. “She’s the one, right?” One of them muttered loud enough for us to hear. “The whore who slept with two brothers from the Weston family.”

Jane asked a maid to make coffee for them, then instructed another maid to call Winston over. Soon, they heard footsteps from the stairs as Winston descended. The two looked up and greeted him. Winston was stunned for a moment. He then smiled. "Mom told me that she met two girls who look as pretty as fairies. I should have guessed earlier. Who else in Taverdale would be so fairy-like apart from you two?" Celeste nearly choked on her coffee. Although Jane looked young and spirited, her choice of words was quite old-fashioned. "You flatter us too much," she quickly said.

_ _He doesn't love me. _I hate him._ Then, everything went black. Flashback ____ The rain drizzled so faintly that one could barely see it if not focused. Only the drops on one's skin could remind one of its presence. A younger Elsie of only nineteen arrived at the Scott mansion. Clad in black jeans and a white tucked-in shirt which was stained with mud, including sections of her head. "Sweet Jesus!" Aunt Paulina exclaimed upon seeing Elsie. She clasped her hand over her mouth. "Set her a shower," she instructed one of the servants.

"It doesn't matter how much it cost me because you're worth everything I own." I feel a tightness in my throat and fight the tears pooling in my eyes. Oak's gift is the most thoughtful gift anyone has ever purchased for me. Thinking about how much it would have cost him, though, makes me a little sick. The first edition copy of Jane Eyre has to be worth tens of thousands of dollars. I return his kiss, wishing I wasn't falling deeper and deeper into this fantasy with him. When we break apart, I look into his beautiful eyes and feel a stray tear trickle down my cheek.
