I rose from bed, frustrated to my gut as I left for the library, the only place I knew I could find my peace. I grabbed a book from the first shelf, it was my best book and I didn't mind reading it over again a hundred times. If it successfully keeps my mind off Andrew and his lady, I'd be glad. I curled up on the couch, looking down into the Jane Eyre novel. Every chapter is etched in my memory, and each sentence felt like an old friend whispering to me again. I didn’t even need to turn the pages to know what came next, yet still, I let my eyes wander across the words, soaking in the comfort of the story.

It looked almost ordinary, which somehow made it more unsettling. Jane leaned closer immediately, curiosity winning over caution like it always did with her. She released my hand and carefully lifted the book off my chest, settling it between her palms like it might bite if mishandled. “It is English,” she said after a quick scan. Just read the bloody content.” Jane shot him a look but did not argue. When I turned to the kitchen to make breakfast, I noticed a big parcel wrapped in a red ribbon with a note, I know you always wanted this edition. I hope you like it. P.S. Breakfast is on the pan. E A smile lit up my face as I tugged off the red ribbon and opened the gift paper to reveal a beautiful hardcover of one of my favorite authors, Jane Austen. It was The Complete Novels of Jane Austen in lilac purple leather-bound hardcover. The book was heavy, but I was in utter awe at its beauty and the intricate design on the front cover. I loved it. I adored it, and I knew if I could, I would keep this edition on a pedestal.

Emily couldn't close her eyes at all. Even though the time has shown at 12:22 AM. She still kept rolling left and right, trying to find a comfortable position. Still, she couldn't close his eyes. A rare first edition of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, its leather-bound cover delicate yet immaculate. She gasped, her fingers brushing over the gilt lettering. Nestled beside it was a small, cream-colored card. She picked it up, her breath catching as she read the elegant script: “For a literature enthusiast. —N.B.”

I preferred to go into a staring contest with an inanimate object that to look at Asher, who I might have consciously forgotten. A book on the shelf stood out, it was inconspicuously standing out among its peers; Jane Eyre. A classic I had gotten as a gift for my eighteenth birthday from Reene, thinking of my Reene my eyes began to tear up. I hadn’t contacted any one from home since and although it was barely twelve hours since I left, I could not help thinking of them.

The one thing that she turns to when she needs an escape from her reality at the moment. “You must have something.” Gabe prombts her. “An old, worn out copy of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë that I keep in between my mattresses so that no one will find it and take it from me. Reading that book always brings me comfort.” And gives her hope. It makes her feel so much better to read it.
