CHAPTER 10 - JANE I open my eyes to a silver light shining down on me. My eyes are heavy from sleeping for what seems like ages. I look around and there's nothing familiar about this place. I try to move but my hands are chained and my legs too. I'm only in my panties and lace bra. My mouth is gagged with a piece of clothing. My skin is smudged with dirt and a bit of slimy substances. Tears slide down my eyes as I look around the place again. It seems to be a tube-like cage but it's transparent. My gaze travels farther and I might be wrong, but this looks like a cave. A creepy, blood-curdling, eerie, horrific cave.

Jane woke up feeling groggy, her head pounded and her eyes felt like a whole desert wind had blown sand in them. Her throat was dry and she felt nauseous. The previous night’s events had her eyes snap open and only then did she register Ryan’s scent. Lavender infused chocolate surrounded her and she inhaled sharply. “We should talk,” Ryan said from her window. He stood with his back to her and his arms were crossed over his chest. Jane shifted on the bed and she clutched her head as the room spun. She gulped greedily from the glass of water on her nightstand and looked at Ryan as he turned to look at her and leaned down on the window sill.

I knew who it was from the second I saw it, my heart did a traitorous flip as I carried it upstairs, glancing over my shoulder like Mirabel might appear at any moment. I slipped into our room, locked the door, and tore it open on my bed. Inside was a small wooden box. Nestled in velvet lay a rare first-edition copy of Jane Eyre, the cover worn but beautiful, it pages edged in gold. My breath caught. I’d mentioned it once during the holidays, of how it was my ultimate book boyfriend fantasy in physical form. Rhys had remembered. I opened it carefully. Tucked inside the front cover was a handwritten note on heavy cream paper, his strong, decisive script unmistakable.

JANE's POV I woke up with a terrible headache. I was on the floor, and I struggled to remember why I was lying under my mirror stand. I tried to stand up but my head was banging and my eyes were spinning. I fell down twice when I tried to stand up so I decided to stay still for a while before I attempted to get up again. I got up without falling down this time. My hand was on my head, and it was aching badly. I took out my phone to check the time, but I couldn't see clearly because my eyes were half closed.
