The crowd slowly went back to shopping, leaving Jessica on the floor with a bruised face and busted lip.
“Here,” I said, offering my hand and pulling her up. She winced, her leg clearly hurt too.
We stood there in silence for a minute. I had no idea what to say.
Hope kept glancing between us.
“Is that her?” Jessica asked, looking at Hope.
I nodded. “That’s my daughter, Hope.”
She smiled painfully. “She’s all grown.”
“Mummy, who is she?” Hope asked, tugging my sleeve.
“Go wait in the car, baby. I’ll meet you soon.” I shooed her gently. She gave Jessica one last look before leaving.
