She didn't wait around to see what was about to happen. When Luke arrived, Jessica was just walking out of the cafe with her arms wrapped around Tristan's. Seeing Luke's dark face, Jessica's heart skipped a beat. "Luke, how come you're here?" Jessica quickly released Tristan's arm and walked up to Luke. "Luke, you know my cousin, right?" To prevent such situations from happening, Jessica had shown Luke Tristan's photo and told him that Tristan was her cousin. Faced with Luke's appearance, Tristan wasn't as nervous and scared as Jessica. Instead, he was very relaxed.

"Yes." I reached for the bottle. Poured for Linda first and then him. The room stayed painfully quiet. The tension was loud and piercing. I could feel Linda watching us now. Catching every glance and silence. And Jake wasn't helping. His eyes never left me. Like Linda wasn't even there. I leaned forward to set the bottle down and Jake spoke. "Still nervous around me, Jessy?" My hand froze. The nickname cut through me. Linda looked up sharply. I lifted my eyes to Jake. "Don't call me that," I said sternly.

“He barely attends normal gatherings anymore.” Something about the way she said it sounded more hopeful than confident.
