Jayden muttered under his breath. I didn’t know who Jace was. But whoever they were, I couldn’t blame them. Sounded like they had the right idea walking away. Jayden leaned back, breathing like he was trying to keep from falling apart. “I get it now,” he whispered. “I’ve been fooled my whole damn life.” I let out a slow breath, hoping what I said next would reach him, really reach him. “None of this is your fault, son.” The word "son" slipped out again. But this time… I didn’t hold it back. “It’s one thing to make mistakes, Jayden… and it’s another thing to own up to them.”
