"Is he dead?" The room was so silent that all I could hear was her heavy breathing. I looked over at Giovanni but he had his head slightly bent, he couldn't look at her. I never thought I'd see Gio look that defeated, he was the stone cold one among us. Things like death never fazed but here he was unable to look at the eye of the woman Declan was crazy about. I pressed my face against his shoulder and felt the exhaustion of the entire night settle into my bones all at once now that it was safe to feel it. We stayed like that for a long moment. Then he said, quietly, into my hair: "Finn is dead." I pulled back enough to look at his face. "Not from my hand," he said. "The damage. He had been running on nothing for too long and his body just... stopped." He held my gaze. "It's over." I waited to feel relief but what came instead was a heavy exhaustion that had nothing happy in it. I thought about the sounds that had come through the stone walls of the vault all night — the fighting, the alarms, the particular silences that followed certain sounds.

His hand moved on its accord as he picked the call. “Where are you? Come over here right now!” Graeme Clough kept mute as he gazed at Johan's corpse beside him. “Hey! Why are you silent, do you want to lose your job?” “He's dead.”

I couldn't hear what was happening but I heard someone asking to call the ambulance as I laid on the ground, supported in someone's arms who held me tight as the feeling of death consumed me.
