I turned back to Ruby’s bed, and stared at her still body, and soft shallow breaths.
“No,” I whispered. “She’s not dying. Not on my watch.”
But in truth, it felt like my heart was being ripped into pieces.
I gritted my teeth, sat beside her again, and wrapped her hand in mine.
“I’ll find a way,” I said. “Even if I have to burn down the world to do it.”
The hallway felt colder when John finally showed up. His hair was a mess, shirt half-buttoned, and eyes bloodshot.
He looked around wildly, then rushed up to the doctor I had previously spoken to.
