Slow, deliberate, heavy footsteps.
"What is that?" one of the soldiers stammered, looking toward the dark mouth of the cave.
"It’s not the drones," Richard said, his breath hitching.
"Get behind the shield!" Miller commanded, his voice breaking. "Anything coming out of that tunnel is a target!"
"Look," Vance pointed, his clawed hand trembling. "It’s him."
Joshua stepped out into the clearing.
He was wearing nothing but tattered, mud-stained rags. His chest was bare, his skin pale, unmarked. He walked with his hands empty, palms open, eyes fixed on the chaotic scene of plasma fire and shifting, monstrous forms.
