Jace DAYS BEFORE The bed creaked in protest as I reached for the leather-bound journal which had turned into a close companion for the last couple of weeks. Forbidden knowledge had been inked into every page with intentionality I could only thank the author for. I opened to the page I had dog-eared for days, sinking into the information there.

But then, why were all her belongings still here? She stepped toward the shelves and ran an index finger horizontally across the spine of each book, noting the authors. Stephen King. Paul Tremblay. Lauren Beukes. All horror, violence, and morbid. Certainly not what Jade preferred to read. The magazines held a different texture, they were smooth but thinner, and her fingertip snagged every crevice. She plucked a random one out and examined the cover. Vogue. Flipping through the magazine, she noted several of the corners were folded as a bookmark. She glanced over the articles on those pages: Interviews with influential people, food and drink reviews, and beauty products.

Rearranging the books, I found a small brown book wedged behind them, but it didn’t have a title or seem to belong to the library. While putting the library books up, I took the unmarked book and opened the cover to see if something was inside to help me figure out where the book went. The cover had nothing, so I flipped the page and saw it was a journal. The handwriting looked familiar as if I had seen it before. Flipping the pages, I skimmed the contents and saw that it discussed microchips. It was also about changed wolves. I took the book to the loft to find out if it was related to the same thing I wanted to create.

Maybe because I need something, anything, to distract me from the hollow cracking sound inside my chest. My fingers graze the spines of faded books, most of them worn with time, forgotten like the memories they hold. I don’t expect to find anything of value. But then, near the back of the bottom shelf, I notice a thick leather-bound journal wedged awkwardly between two histories of the royal bloodlines.

It looks like some old scientific journal.” “Actually, Lo. I’m really pretty tired. Sorry. Do you mind if we pick up tomorrow?”

The bookshelf was just as tall as Andrew so he could easily access the books there. The bookshelf had all sorts of books, ranging from fictional novels to nonfictional novels, to educational novels and textbooks. Her eyes caught titles like; The Redwall series by Brian Jacques, Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink, The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros and a lot more. Even the Encyclopedia was in his bookshelf. And there was also some novels on the basis of business and finance. The book the lad was currently reading was The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie.

Pointing my fork at the chair across from me. Clear relief was visible as Justina made herself comfortable. “So, you guys are leaving tomorrow?” “Yeah. I was trying to gather some information with these books.” my head angled towards the books on the other side of the sofa. Justina got up and looked at them. “I don’t remember these books.” “My bio moms gave them to me.” I shrugged. “I guess they said there was important information in them.” “Do you need help?” Justina asked hopefully. “Sure, if you want to spend your day reading witch books with me. Join the club.”
