I gasped, crying out with almost every step, desperately ignoring the sharp blasts of glassy pain in my ankles and knees and hips, ignoring also the things shrieking in the pews.
I knew I’d never make it past the flames spreading through the pews to the exit, but I also knew on the other side of the stage, steps led down to classrooms in the basement. A concrete basement, that wouldn’t burn. If I could just get to them, maybe . . .
Somehow, I made it to the other side of the sanctuary. Just before I plunged down those steps, I risked a glance over my shoulder . . .
