It had been a long time since we started the tour. I was tired, but also rather thrilled. The estate was beautiful. There were no extra pieces of furniture, only what was necessary. The last place to visit was the library. The library was huge. All the covers of the books were black. They were gorgeous. My hands itched to trace the title of the books. “Do you love books?” Dela asked. I nodded. “Back at home…” Dela held up her hand. “This is your home now. We’d planned our next path more wisely and carefully, tracking the path from one town to another so to ensure we had enough time to walk during the day and find somewhere to eat and rest for the nights. We’d ended up staying at The old lantern in for just over a week, more because of the weather forecast, it had said the snow would completely stop and the sun would be out meaning spring was definitely on its way. I stared at the hopeful face in the photo before looking up at the clear blue sky outside the window. A gentle breeze drifted through, carrying the fresh scent of the plants. I set my book down and took a sip of my drink. All the toxic people and their drama were far behind me, no longer able to disrupt the peaceful life I had rebuilt with my own hands.

Jaxon murmured, swaying with her, “I used to think happiness came in big moments. But it’s this. You. Them. Home.” Her eyes shimmered. “I never thought I’d have all this.” He kissed her temple. “You deserve even more.” She pressed her face against his chest, listening to his heartbeat. Their home was still messy, still full of boxes, but it was theirs. And tomorrow would be full of noise and sticky hands and spilled juice and late-night feedings. And love. So much love. “This is the best chapter yet,” she whispered. Jaxon smiled against her hair. “Not even close. We’ve still got a whole book to write.”

I muttered to the empty room. And for the first time since I’d signed the lease, the words didn’t feel like a lie. They felt like a promise. To myself. To him. To whatever version of home we were about to build in this small, ugly, perfect space. I stood up slowly—knees creaking, back stiff from carrying boxes—and started unpacking the next one. Books first. Always books first. Because even if the walls were bare and the view was brick, the stories could keep us company until he got here.

Homey. There were no glinting chandeliers or polished marble floors. The space was low-lit, warm, and masculine. A dark leather couch dominated the living room, draped with a fleece throw that looked like it had been dragged off a bed. A punching bag hung in the corner beside a dartboard riddled with holes. The kitchen was neat, almost suspiciously so—counters scrubbed clean, cabinets bare except for protein powder and three unopened bottles of whiskey. But it was the small details that threw me. A stack of books slumped against the wall—wolf history texts, leadership manuals, and, bizarrely, a slim volume of poetry wedged between them like a guilty secret.

The place looked like it held more than a thousand books all placed neatly in these large rows of book shelves.
