The mass dropped and hissed, dispersing. The spear demon moved again—wounded but fast. His weapon aimed for Kael's back, but Rea was already moving. The way he said "mate" made Esteria's cheeks flush, though she tried to hide it behind El-Kharis's broad frame.

I'd thought the pain from him kicking me was bad, but the pain of his dead weight bearing down on my beaten body had me balancing the edge of consciousness. I looked up, trying to force the engulfing black away and met pale blue eyes. It seemed my guardian wasn't just a pretty face.
