Keona even blinked in disbelief; her sister didn’t seem like the same person anymore. “So what’s your business with me? And why does it matter if the Alpha is interested in me? Isn’t that a good thing? Maybe he’s no longer interested in you because you’re ugly and old,” Ale said with a smirk, throwing Keona’s own words back at her. To Ale, Keona was nothing more than a pest. “W–what?” Keona stared at Ale in disbelief. “Nice to meet you. I’m Ale. Pleased to meet you, Luna Keona,” Ale said sweetly, emphasizing the last words.

I moved toward the window, desperate to understand why he had left, and then I saw him in the moonlight. Kane was in the clearing behind the cabin, his body shaking violently as if he were having seizures rather than just feeling emotional. Dark veins stood out on his arms and neck, looking like poison spreading through him. When he tilted his head up toward the full moon, I noticed something change about his face. And his eyes—his eyes burned with an otherworldly light that reminded me of every creature I had ever feared in the dark. “Get back inside!” Kane's voice carried across the distance, but it sounded different now—deeper, rougher, almost animalistic.

Then she remembered that in Lyle’s absence, Adam has been acting as the leader of the village. “It’s good to see you all here. Our village, and all the people of this mountain have been waiting for this night for a long time. Tonight is the night that we welcome the daughter of the goddess at her first full moon. And tonight is the night that she will choose her life mate.” Many of the people that were standing at the back of the room turned around and looked directly at Amaris. Kane did not come back that night, or the day after, or the one after that. The keep did not need to tell me where he was. I said nothing. I packed quietly instead. On the fifth evening, my door opened and Selena walked in as though she belonged there. Kane followed a step behind her. “Tonight is the Moonfire Festival,” she said. “I thought you should come.” Before I answered, Kane said, “You’re coming.” I looked at him. “To do what? Stand beside you while the pack watches you dote on her?”

Darius growled, his voice low and dangerous. "That's the elders' choice," Kane said, speaking for the first time. "What about *your* choice?" Luciano and Darius asked at the same time. Kane sighed heavily, running a hand through his dark hair. "I don't know... I can't go another full moon without my mate. Tyrant is already growing wild. He needs her." "And you need your Luna," Darius said, clasping a strong hand on Kane’s shoulder in quiet support. "What becomes of Elara and Anika if she shows up?" Luciano asked, his tone careful.

Talon interrupted them when she spit out, “Hey dumb, dumb, you still don’t know his name.” Amara shrieks as she pushes Kane back, “Oh right, no more mister until you tell me your name.” But then she pulls him forward and kisses him lightly on the lips. Kane picked up her legs and pulled them over his lap as he moved further back on the bed. “My name is Kane. Son of Crius.” Talon and Amara stared at one another and then Kane’s mate whooped, “Thank you moon goddess! I got myself a real-life god as a mate.” Kane smiled and rubbed her legs with little circles while she did a little celebration dance in the bed.

“They haven’t trained you in everything. You and your father didn’t know that the Moon Goddess would never allow a pup to be born from a couple that aren’t true mates. No matter how many mates that your father would have forced your way, you will never have a pup. The Moon Goddess will only allow her chosen mates to have pups, unless she has a bigger plan in mind, like in Zee’s situation.” She motions towards Kane. “That is why Luna Kane is currently pregnant with the heir to our pack. Even though his true mate, which was you, and him weren’t allowed to mate. The Moon Goddess has taken mercy on him and gave me a second mate, which is Alpha Wyatt.” Mike frowns and furrows his eyebrows.
