Once she’s sure that there’s absolutely nothing left for her, Red goes to the door. Then she hears static. Red suddenly goes still. Light seems to bounce off the walls as Red hears the sound of a computer booting up. Slowly turning around, Red sees the computer turned on. Its screen was blank but its humming CPU told her, that despite the damage and lack of electricity, it was open. Red looked around but there was no sign of power anywhere else. A bit shaken, Red takes out her revolver. Then the screen turns on, revealing a white background that had a lot of static.

At least there was a guarantee we'd be alone. After pulling my cell out of my pocket, I waited at the end of the driveway pausing to send her the message. When I touched my phone suddenly it blacked out. I knew it was fully charged so it couldn't be dead. Grabbing my backpack, I pulled out my laptop. No big deal. I was still on the wifi here. I turned on but then there was a weird blip and the screen went dead. "What the hell?" Hitting the power button repeatedly didn't work. I even tried removing the battery and putting it back in but that didn't help either. This was bullshit. Maybe the IT department at school could help.

I whispe‌red. The scre‍en went black. I pressed the power button‌. Nothing. It was completely dead. The last of the cha‍rge was gone. A c‍old wave of panic w‍ashed over me‌. We were stuck on a dark, l‍one‍ly⁠ roa‍d. The people who just tried t‌o r‌u⁠n us‌ off it were still out there. And now I couldn’t even call Silas.

I turned away from the shelf. “The phone,” I said. Back to the reason we were here. Shane nodded, grateful for the redirect. I pulled the burner from my pocket and pressed the power button. Nothing. I pressed it again, holding it longer. Nothing. Shane held out his hand and I gave it to him. He turned it over, checking the port. “Dead,” he said. “Completely flat.” “Can you charge it?”

The price alone was enough to pay off my student loans. “Well? -” I looked at Mr. Wright and his eyes were gesturing at me to turn the laptop on. Shit! “-What are you waiting for?” I gulped. There was no going back now. Please let this work. I pressed the power button, and my soul almost left my body. I pressed it again and again but it was still the same thing. The screen remained blank. I wanted to burst into tears. I was going to get fired for sure.

But now… Now, I'd lost everything. I crawled to the corner where I'd hidden it—coiled inside a rag in a hidden floorboard. My hands shook as I pulled it out. The screen was black. I waited, holding my breath, and flipped the power switch. Nothing. I pressed again. And again. Please, I muttered to myself. Please turn on. Please do something for me. The screen finally came on. The slightest sound, the quietest chime. I leaped and reflexively pressed the volume button all the way down. I enabled silent mode. Then airplane mode. Then I gradually turned Bluetooth off. All the things that could make a noise—disabled.

My breath hitches as I reach for another roll, tossing that one. Revealed, right there, is Akia’s cell phone. I pick it up and turn it over in my hand. Its screen is dark, though I’m not surprised. I press the side buttons, but nothing lights up. I hurry out of the bathroom and find a charger. I plug it in and impatiently wait for the phone to light up.

Must have run over a rock or a nail that I couldn’t see in the downpour. I reached for my phone in the cupholder and tapped the screen, but it stayed black. I tapped it again, but it remained black. It had been low on battery at the gala because I’d forgotten to charge it that morning. Looked like it had died in the meantime. I pulled out the charger from the glove compartment and plugged it into my phone. It was so dead that it still didn’t turn on. It would need a few minutes before it had enough juice to make a call.

The tablet went black. No warning. No flicker. Just dead. Ava sat perfectly still in the folding chair, her breath caught halfway between inhale and curse. She tapped the screen once. Nothing. The air in the tiny apartment shifted — as if something had just entered the space, even though no one had. She stood. Reached for the burner phone. Too late. It buzzed once. Then the screen filled with static. A burst of white light. Then shut off.
