"I think it's because it's completely drained, so it won't turn on. Let the battery charge for a while, and maybe it'll come back later. Oh no! Just when your baby boy called! Such wrong timing!"

That posed a problem now because she figured the Magic On and Off app had probably deactivated and her power button was iffy… She kept pushing the power button to start her phone. She kept pushing it so hard she actually broke her nail and the skin of her thumb and index finger started to redden. Still, the screen remained dark.

“But it’s been dead since we found it.” Maya blinked. “You still have it?” Lily nodded and reached into her drawer, pulling out a small black phone with cracks webbing the screen like a shattered mirror. “I’ve tried everything—charging it, warming the battery, connecting it to my laptop… nothing worked." Lily tried again and it suddenly came on. Her face brightened. "Until now.” She held it up. A small green light blinked in the corner. The screen flickered, and then slowly powered on. Maya jumped to her feet, her eyes wide.

"I'm going to do a factory reset." "You can do that?" "Usually you just hold down buttons in a different combination. It might work and it might not." The power and volume down button didn't work. She held the power and volume up button, but still no change. Lumen held all three down. The screen flashed then went off. Her heart leapt in her chest. "Was that good? Or bad?" Buzz asked. "Very, very good." She glanced over her shoulder. Someone would be coming to check on them soon or bring breakfast.

Dread slowly settles in my chest as I click on the power button of the device but it doesn’t come on. My brows etches up in confusion as I try it again but it stays stuck. I s*ck in a sharp breath, panic rising in my throat as I frantically click on it. Blank. “No, no. Please. This can’t be happening right now.” I mumble to myself, my mind railing with the events of last night. I’d plugged it in before going to bed last night because I didn’t want this to happen. Jeremy isn’t here yet, and that puzzles me.

I turned away from the shelf. “The phone,” I said. Back to the reason we were here. Shane nodded, grateful for the redirect. I pulled the burner from my pocket and pressed the power button. Nothing. I pressed it again, holding it longer. Nothing. Shane held out his hand and I gave it to him. He turned it over, checking the port. “Dead,” he said. “Completely flat.” “Can you charge it?”

Something was coming and whatever it was, it wasn't good. Lightning flashed in the black sky, giving me enough light and time to see the shadows that moved swiftly in the dark as if they were walking on air. My hand reached for my necklace instinctively. If it came down to the worst moment, I would rip off the damn thing that restricted my powers and use my gifts.
