Winston nodded. Sera thought for a while. Then she gave a small grin. "I have time to take a look." Winston nodded, then led the way to the research room. The room was like a greenhouse. The rooms were surrounded by one-way glass, with a variety of equipment. Whoever was inside could not look outside. But the people outside could see inside very well. In that room, several guards were preparing Jake. They stripped the man naked and cleaned his body. He escapes several times, but they always managed to catch him again. Moreover, the room was locked from the outside.

She was starting to feel like a rat in their lab, knowing that she was being watched. She had tried to find the cameras, but it appeared that they were kind enough to give her some privacy by only putting it in her office. Her room and bathroom seemed to be clean, but then, she could be wrong. She would know once she started making her preparations for escape.

It’s dingy and the air feels dry despite having liquids randomly dripping from the clammy ceiling. Gary had tried several times to convince Patrick to go to one of those Escape Rooms, where you paid to be locked in a room and you had to search for clues and solve puzzles to free yourself in a set amount of time. Gary had thought they were tremendously fun and exciting, but Patrick had had zero interest. He didn’t like murder mysteries, brain teasers, or even the game Clue.

After an hour, Marcus stopped and entered a code on a hidden door. It opened. Clean. Modern. Terrifying. “Welcome to hell,” Marcus whispered. They crept through corridors. Guards everywhere. Marcus guided them past patrols until they reached the main lab — a vast chamber filled with machines and glass cells. Celeste froze. “How many?” “Dozens,” Marcus said. “She’s been collecting them for years.” “We’re freeing them.” “We can’t,” Rylan warned. “We came for evidence, not a rescue.” “I don’t care.”
