Blood from the dead rat spilled over until the alive rat was lying in it. Instead of getting up and moving, it just calmly started licking at the blood on its paws. The sight sickened me worse than I thought it would have. Getting up, I went to retrieve a syringe and something to pin the rat down with. Once it was pinned and secured, it didn’t seem bothered by it, just continued to lay there, and lick its paws.

They stopped at the animal testing section, where rows of glass cages lined the wall. Inside them, laboratory rats lay under observation. Cassie’s smile faded instantly. Their tiny bodies trembled. Legs stiff. Movements limited. The paralysis was unmistakable. Nathaniel’s voice remained calm, precise, almost surgical. “This is where it begins.” A small group of professionals gathered around them, their attention snapping fully to Nathaniel as he made introductions. “This is Robert Gath,” he said. “Head of research.”

The others went back to their workstations. They decided to finish their part of the tasks and do some experiments to keep their mind off of the humanoid and to help them focus their attention on what they need to do at the moment. The research lab was filled again with the rustling of papers and tinkling of glasses. Sometimes you'll even be able to hear small explosions due to the wrong diagnosis of their experiments. This keeps the six of them busy until the end of their shift.

If a living organism is overgrown, it can go astray and become a dangerous kind of species. So after we took a little we put that potion in a safe place so that no animal or even a human could drink that. We looked closely at the rat and were shocked to see it move fast inside a small cage. Harmful if mishandled.” It wasn’t even a lie. Not entirely. The officer didn’t look convinced. “I’ll need to verify that,” he said, stepping closer. “Unlock the door.”
