At her feet squatted a thin, shivering little boy, no more than five or six, hugging his knees.
I stopped in my tracks.
Arthur immediately sensed the change, his sharp gaze landing on the stall.
Just then, Kate looked up, her gray-blue eyes meeting mine unexpectedly.
She jumped up from her old stool like she'd been burned.
The motion sent her stall toppling.
She stumbled, nearly fell, then bolted toward me.
"Helen!"
Kate dropped to her knees in front of me, grabbing desperately at the hem of my pale sable coat. Those filthy, red, cracked hands smeared black, greasy stains onto the luxurious fur.
