I clenched my hands tightly. Panic gripped me as I recalled the helplessness I had felt in my dying moments during my previous life. The Dead Zone had earned its terrifying name. The eastern border of the old Moonfall territory marks the starting point of our massive convoy which travels through the territory. The Riverlands presented their vibrant green trees until we reached this border. The sky above us turned a permanent, cloudy gray. A thick black ash layer covered the ground which had remained in place for twenty-two years. The trees stood as twisted blackened skeletons which pointed toward the sky. A complete pack had been buried in this graveyard. I stared out of the truck window while sitting in the passenger seat next to Dante. My chest felt heavy because of my deep sadness.

Outside the window, the city gives way to suburbs, then to sprawling properties with gates and security cameras. When we finally turn onto a private road, my stomach drops. The Kingsley mansion looks like something from a movie. Stone facade, multiple wings, windows that gleam in the afternoon sun and the garden that’s so perfect that they look painted. We park near a side and dad grabs my duffel bag from the trunk while I follow him inside. The interior is even worse. Marble floors, crystal chandeliers and artwork that belongs in museums. Staff members move through the halls with practiced efficiency, barely glancing at us.

I knew better; the fish I gave her was boneless. Jane's lips trembled as she tried to steady her voice, "That's because the nurses cleaned her up before they brought her here." "Cleaned her up, huh?" My voice turned icy. "Then answer me this: after death, the body cools, starting with the limbs." I pressed down on my daughter's rigid arms and belly. "So why is her stomach colder than her arms and legs?" I yanked up her sleeve to reveal more than just cold skin. "Livor mortis already? That was fast."

This was something even he himself could not imagine, because once this place became a realm of death… then the realm of death would become the place where all deceased beings gather, the place where the dead can be reincarnated. This place is known as the land of the dead; only those who are truly worthy can be reincarnated here. And only those considered ordinary humans can reincarnate more easily in this land of the dead. For those with great virtue, it would be even easier, but for those with heavy karma… there is no way—absolutely none—and even he was no exception here.
