Adrian’s friends moved faster than he did. One of them reached out and ripped it from my hand, ending the call mid-ring. Another laughed under his breath, like he’d just seen something absurd. “Seriously?” someone scoffed. “Your fiancée runs into a little trouble and the first thing she does is call her mommy?” Another chimed in, shaking his head with a laugh. “Adrian, this is next-level childish. We’re grown adults, not kindergarteners. What’s she going to do next—cry for a nanny?”

Finish quickly—or be prepared to face the consequences.” A collective gasp. Someone shouted, “Tell us what the punishment is!”

They were armed, pipes, knives, and a rusted axe, and their movements carried the easy confidence of predators who knew they had the upper hand. “Scavengers,” I muttered, more to myself than to Ember. “Friendly?” she whispered, though her tone made it clear she already knew the answer. “No.” The scavengers stopped in the middle of the street, their leader stepping forward. He was a tall man with a thick beard and a scar cutting across his temple. His coat was patched with mismatched fabric, and the edges were dark with what looked like old blood. “Anything?” he barked, his voice rough.

Then I heard a chorus of laughter behind the rock I was hiding at. Minions was good word to describe them, the little pip squeak chirp of laughter was exactly what they sounded like.

She stepped out again, leaving the two of us alone. I opened the last CV to see his qualifications. "Tell me a bit about yourself." I said just as I took a sip from my coffee. I immediately had a spit take as soon as he removed his glasses. "Oh wow, my bad. Sorry, am I that ugly because I can put the glasses back if you prefer." He joked but it's not funny. He looks oddly familiar and I don't like who he reminds me of, he has a scar on his right eyebrows.
