Then she leaned in slightly, lowering her voice like she was sharing pack secrets. “Next time you come here, don’t let these guys intimidate you,” she whispered. “They act like stone-faced lawyers, but they’re mostly harmless.” My wolf gave a skeptical huff. Define harmless. Kate pointed discreetly across the room. “That one with the files? He is an absolute monster in court.” Then she tilted her chin. “The one who just spilled his coffee? He is in the criminal law department. He works especially on minors’ cases. He’s the one people call when everything’s falling apart.”

“Psychological studies mostly.” His smile fades slightly. “Fiction?” “Oh. Right.” I clear my throat. “Yes. Fiction too.” “Favourite novel?” Why was this suddenly feeling like an oral exam? I panic and blurt out the first thing that comes to mind. “Gone Girl.” The interviewer goes silent and just stares at me. Then he finally says. “Interesting choice for a library focused on family and community engagement.” Right. What I mentioned was an erotic murder thriller. Terrible choice for the family and community.

And yet, here I am. I knock on the door as a common courtesy, entering right after. “Hey,” I say softly. She sniffles, desperately trying to pick up something that resembles work. “How are those cases?” I point to the stack on her desk. “Uhm, fine,” she says lowly. “It was a lot of reading material at first, but I’ve gotten used to it.” “See, this is why I never wanted to be a lawyer: all the reading and arguing.” “Yeah, and why business?” she counters.

A lot of how she had acted and reacted since I met her made more sense to me now, just like this deal with Banks and Brice made more sense to me now. They were both delusional, horrible human beings, but Brice’s client getting him his job at a top tier law firm and the fact that such a firm would take him on and keep him there was something I hadn’t been able to make sense of. I couldn’t understand why a firm like that would allow themselves to get into that position, but for a client like Banks, I got it. According to my lawyers, the man was a notorious litigator in any of the jurisdictions where he operated his various businesses. Firms made millions off of him as a result of his affinity

He reached down onto the floor, which was scattered with legal books and photocopies of documents, and pulled an enormous black tome onto the deskProperty Law and Legal Dispute, Volume 6. “If it’s gotta be done, it’s gotta be done,” I said, staring at the huge book in front of us. “You know, if you want, I can look through it,” said Zeke. “It’s fine,” I said. “You haven’t been getting a lot of sleep these last few days, Alex.” He was right. From dawn to midnight, I was looking into the charges laid against me, hoping there was a way. “I’m fine,” I said, even though my eyes were red around their rims. “But I could stretch my legs,” I said. “Mind if I take a walk?”

I set it face-down on the kitchen counter and tell myself I am not panicking. I find the library. It is a real one, with floor to ceiling shelves on three walls, a rolling ladder on a brass rail, two leather chairs angled toward each other near a window. The books are organized by subject. Law. Economics. History. A full shelf of philosophy. A smaller section at the end — fiction, which surprises me, though I cannot say why. I pull out one of the novels and read the first page standing up. I put it back. I cannot concentrate. My mind is too busy.

“ Nice place you got here, must be some big shot yourself, attorney” Walking past the foyer into the living room, Val praised as she looked around the magnificent luxury before her. " I'm only a humble citizen" The attorney chuckled and combed a finger through his neat blonde hair. The "humble" living room of attorney Chris' apartment looked more like an office with several files neatly stacked about. It was spacious enough to be a master bedroom, but instead of a closet and an actual bed, what took most of the space was a bookshelf filed with several yellow-back folders and old books.

"That's what happens when you play with fire." Mistress. The word coiled in my gut. A raw, bitter taste. Reigna, my Reigna, a mistress? It wasn't true. But Emma’s words, laced with venom, were a mirror of my own past foolishness. I looked at the stack of law books, their spines mocking me. Contract Law, Criminal Procedure, Evidence. Reigna paid for these. All of them.

You reorganized everything. “You said I could.” “I didn't think you would actually do it.” He pulled a book from the shelf Crime and Punishment and smiled slightly. “Russian literature section. Alphabetical by author.” “As it should be.” “And you moved all my law books to the office.” “Where they belong.” He set the book back carefully, then turned to face her. “Thank you.” “For reorganizing your books?” “For being here.” The words hung between them, heavier than they should be.
