He stared down at my book. "I don't know how you feel that is enough to truly escape." He shakes his head at my method. "I find it a bit more lasting than drinking. Other than that they are pretty much the same. They both leave you broken at the end of the experience. But at least you can take something away from reading." He scoffs at my words. "What could you possibly take away from reading?" He spits. "How on earth can it help you escape like drinking or drugs can?"

That was when I decided I needed to do something with my hands to get the thought out of my mind. My mum had asked me weeks ago to sort through the books in the guest room she was recognising,as she did every summer , moving things between rooms in a way that never seemed to result in anything being thrown away, to her old things mattered and were important. I pulled the bookshelf toward me and began taking things down in stacks,ordering them, giving my brain the simple task of categorizing so it would stop thinking of what happened at the gala. A journal was in the third sack.

Today is my last day in this city. Perhaps the weather, too, felt the weight of goodbye. A cold front had swept in overnight, and the wind now bit through coats and scarves with a practiced indifference. People on the streets hurried past, wrapped so tightly they resembled something out of a deli freezer—bundled, muted, waiting to be shelved or sold. Every breath I took became a fleeting white cloud, disappearing before it could mean anything. It seemed appropriate. I was leaving. And things like this—the cold, the fog on your lips, the finality of silence—should have a proper ending.
