The silence felt heavier, almost respectful. Kai opened the rear passenger door of the black car. “We’re leaving.” I wiped my eyes angrily. “I’m not going anywhere.” “You are.” “No,” I said firmly. “I don’t even know who you are!” “You will.” “I don’t care! I want to go home!” Kai’s eyes stayed on me. “You can’t.” “Why not?” “Because we’re leaving the human world.” I stared, then laughed, shaky and disbelieving. “The human world? Right. What next? You’re going to tell me dragons, fairies, werewolves, and vampires are real too?” Neither of them laughed. Neither even smiled.

"The men who survive in this world," I continued calmly, "are the ones who remain afraid after everyone else starts feeling safe." No one argued. They simply returned their attention to the monitors. And I walked closer to the wall of screens, folding my arms across my chest.

The bright city lights and the busy sound of the chaotic streets were much different from the peaceful safety of home, but I pushed my worries and fear down deep, refusing to let on to anyone that inside, I was a mess of fear and other emotions I couldn't get my head around.

She sobbed, ugly and raw, finally letting out everything she had kept buried. "I want to leave," she whispered. "I want to leave so badly. But I'm scared." "Being scared is normal. But being scared doesn't mean you stay." She looked at me. "How do you do it? How do you stay so strong?" I laughed again. This time, it was softer. "I'm not strong," I said. "I'm just done. There's a difference."

Tess I find many things in this world scary: walking to the bathroom late at night when you don’t have a nightlight on, fake friends, the members of the Safir pack, and last, and probably my biggest fear, is the thought of spending eternity alone. Sue me for thinking that’s a terrible fate, but that is how I feel without lying to myself.
