I tried to dodge the attack, but I slipped on a rock underfoot and crashed into the wall. Pain shot through my still-healing wound, and a cold sweat broke out as I froze in place. Three heavily armed mercenaries, clad in matte-black tactical gear and Vance syndicate insignias, breached the shattered ledge using high-tension ziplines from an adjacent rooftop. Malakai returned fire instantly, his sidearm barking three times in rapid succession. The lead mercenary dropped hard against the broken glass, a tight cluster of crimson blooming across his chest.

All I cared about was Rochelle. “Enough,” I said coldly. “This ends now.” Delight’s laughter returned, softer this time but no less chilling. “Oh, it will end. For all of you. Because you won’t leave her, will you? You’ll die trying to save her. And I’ll win. What better way to end the story?” The timer ticked down to 3 minutes. Adrien and I moved quickly, ignoring Delight’s taunts. I knelt beside Rochelle, my hands trembling as I examined the bomb.

No sooner had the words left her mouth that a bone-chilling zombie roar echoed from outside. “Zombies have breached the base!” June slid down in terror and clutched Poppy tightly as her face drained of color. Holding June and Poppy, a flicker of hesitation crossed my face. The painful lessons from my past life made me wary of trusting Castiel to come save us. Besides, the last time he returned, it was already too late. I pulled the gun tucked behind my back and handed it to June. It was our only means of defense. The gun offered a small measure of consolation at least.

Also, I needed to keep Bella here, and if allowing her to torture me was the distraction needed, I was willing to sacrifice myself for it. Rochelle ran back into the room. Her beautiful face was in disarray, and she had changed her dress. Her eyes were wide as she took in Bella who was screaming, deranged with hate. She shoved Bella away from me. “Are you stupid? Laurent wilk kill us both if you harm his mate!” Bella snarled at Rochelle. “Too late for that. He’s already planning to. If I’m going to die, im taking this ungrateful bitch with me!”

Disappointment washed over me like a cold bath. Rosa left me to fend for myself. She did not come back to pick me up. If I was not a Wolvesmith, I would have died. I saw black and fell to the ground.
