The library review came out in November. Not the architectural press review — that had come in the spring, the threshold as held breath language having been picked up and distributed through the professional publications. This was a different kind of review: a feature in the city's cultural magazine, the kind of piece that was written not for architects but for the people who used the buildings, the account of the library as a lived experience rather than a designed object.

“For training.” I smiled despite myself. “Tell her thank you.” The maid hesitated. “Actually…” “What?” “She said not to thank her.” I frowned. “Why?” “You’ll understand later.” Strange… very strange. The scent of aged paper and leather bindings filled the air, and afternoon sunlight streamed through tall windows, illuminating reading nooks tucked between the stacks. "No I don’t, why don’t you tell me?" We make our way to the book shelves and I pull out the history book I had lent from the backpack on Roman’s hands. I push it back in the history book section, then I sign on the paper that hangs above the piles. It is the one thing I like about Lupin’s library; not needing to consult the librarian before lending a book and not having to walk to the librarian’s table to sign in or out. "Did you even read the book?" Roman asks as I start to scan the length of the stands again. I need a new read. Lycania’s history is actually really interesting.

I stopped at the library door and smiled to myself. ‘Books are better than people. Books don’t hate on you for something you didn’t do.’ I pushed the door open and breathed in the wonderful smell of books. ‘Paradise.’ I strolled to the shelves and scanned through the books, reading their names off their spines. ‘It seems Dante wasn’t joking when he said half of his library was filled horrors.’ A book caught my eye, and I pulled it from the others. “Bone and Souls by B. Brian.” I read the name aloud and skimmed through the description behind it. “This seems interesting.”

She speedily looked away, blushing faintly, and quickly walked towards the entrance door embracing the paper bag she had been holding. “Hello Madame Sella, good morning,” Lianne said, greeting sweetly the lady librarian as she took out the books from the paper bag and placed it on the countertop. Madame Sella was in her forties but still single. A kind woman in her own way, she was like Lianne’s adviser of problems; almost like a mother she never had. “Oh, hello dear. You’ve come to return those books back I see,” the lady librarian answered. “What good timing. There were two students that kept on coming back here every hour checking if there is an available book of this edition already retu

I liked the smell of books. I returned the book I wanted to return to the librarian. When I turned to leave, my eyes fell on a person who was reading a book calmly at the corner table. "Trevor," I murmured under my breath. His full focus was on the book as if he were reading for something very interesting. The librarian noticed me and glanced at Trevor. As she adjusted to her surroundings, she took small steps forward to look around. The carpeted floor absorbed any sounds of footsteps, making the place quiet enough to read.
