During dinner, we all laughed and made jokes, and the light-hearted banter helped ease the tension that had built up inside me. Logan’s brows furrowed in confusion. “What?” His English accent showed very clearly in the one word. Luna’s lips curved. “I said let’s hear a joke. You said you’re still funny, funny man? Soon, Andy found himself laughing, and before he realized it, he calmed down and fell asleep. Surprisingly, it happened the next day and the day after. Before Andy realized it, he found himself expecting the jokes more and more. After all, they helped him calm down and forget his sorrow, even if it was for a brief moment.

"You laugh at my jokes because of how stupid they sound?" I nodded. "Yep! You didn't think they were hilarious, did you? I know a thousand people who can tell jokes, and you're not even among them." Magnus grinned. "You know why I tell those dry jokes, Astrid?" I shook my head. "No, why?" "Because they're incomplete without your laughter. Every time you laugh, you make the joke full because it is a joke." At first, I laughed, but then I frowned. It dawned on me that he was teasing me rather than complimenting me. “Are you allowed to make dead jokes about your parents?” “I know it’s rude,” he replied, grinning with zero shame. “It’s not supposed to be funny. But I get one morbid joke, don’t I? Don’t we all? Some day you’ll be making jokes about your family too.” I doubled over in laughter, the kind that shook my shoulders and made my ribs ache. Not because it was that funny, but because I needed it. Because it pulled me out of the heavy place in my mind where grief lived. Because he looked so happy saying such a thing when there was nothing to laugh about.
