“But you don’t want to be?” I asked gently. I threw caution to the wind, and I bravely took his hand. He smiled at me, his golden eyes liquid and dripping with an emotion that I couldn’t quite read. Fondness, perhaps, or relief.
His shoulders slumped, and I rubbed soothing, concentric circles over the bumps of his knuckles. “It’s not really my thing,” he admitted, very quietly. “I just want a simple life. It might sound boring to you, I don’t know – but I just want to live with my girlfriend, get a little log cabin or an old cottage, maybe, and grow my own vegetables. That’s not really the sort of life a werewolf signs up for, let alone an Al- a high-ranking one.”
