I climbed the dorm stairs two at a time, the building quiet except for the distant thump of music from someone's room. Lesley was out—probably at another study session or grabbing late-night snacks with her group. Good. I needed solitude. I needed to unpack this without her worried eyes on me. The room felt smaller when I flicked on the lights—our beds pushed against opposite walls, desk cluttered with textbooks and half-empty coffee mugs, the string lights casting a deceptive warmth.
