I didn’t have to search long. Lila was there. Tucked into the corner alcove. Curled into one of the velvet armchairs like she belonged there more than any book ever had. Her legs were folded beneath her, one slipper discarded at her feet. A book lay open in her lap, its pages tilted toward the light of a single, flickering lamp. She didn’t look up at first. But I knew she heard me. Her shoulders stiffened—not in alarm, but recognition. I stopped just outside the circle of light, unsure why I hadn’t spoken.

Watching. The cage might gleam gold — but the wolves circled close. The laughter from her quip still echoed when Valentina reached for the tray. The envelope was crisp, heavy, the kind of paper that whispered money and power. Her crimson nails slid beneath the flap. Inside, a single card. No greeting. No signature. Ryan let out a long breath and collapsed onto his bed. Lila sat at a massive oak desk in the corner of the estate's private library, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling shelves of leather-bound books. She hadn’t changed out of her clothes from the night before, the collar of her cream silk blouse still stiff with a faint, dried rust stain. Her fingers flew across the keyboard of her laptop, her eyes bloodshot but locked onto the glowing screen.

Sike and Nessa were closer to the entrance, like they always were, ready to run if something came. Just a dream. The same dream. The one I had been having for as long as I could remember. I wiped the sweat off my face and tried to slow my breathing. It never got easier. Every time I saw that woman fall, every time I heard that little girl scream, I woke up feeling like I had been the one hit by that arrow. . . . My name is Lila. The scent of Lila's pheromones filled the air, thick and intoxicating, wrapping around Elara like a seductive whisper. She stood at the edge of the library, watching as Lila moved through the room, her hips swaying with a slow, deliberate rhythm. In the middle of the book, there was a purple stone. It was the Book Of Shadows. Her mother's book. Layla wiped the sands off the book with her hands, her face a mask of confusion. Why did Riven hide the book from her? Why did he bury it here? Was there something Riven wasn't telling her? She was still engrossed in her thoughts, wondering why Riven would bury her mother's book of magic when a twig snapped like a firecracker behind her. Suddenly alert, she turned around just in time to see a familiar looking man raise his hand and strike her on her face.

Why do you always come here?” Yara, the most welcoming person I know said as she poked her head through the little open space of the door she held. I smiled at her, “Oh... If it isn’t Yara the angel whom the whole nation finds to be so kind and full of love. Imagine they finally find out you’ve been putting on a facade.” I said to her. “And your little princess business comes down to nothing.”

Lila's POV: “What do you want?” I asked, trying to remain calm. I wasn't scared; I knew I could handle them myself, but I needed to be careful. “Where’s that puny Wolf savior of yours?” He demanded. “I don’t see him around, so she must be all alone.” Someone behind him said. “He wasn’t so puny when you nearly peed your pants earlier.” I retorted, trying to think of a way to create a distraction. I wasn’t weak, but I knew my limits. I could take them on, but it would definitely cost me some bones.
