“She is normalizing.” Lily and Dylan continued on to the Gallery which is above the Archive. Lily stood at the railing and gazed down. The rows of shelves of books stretched out straight lines from where she was standing. She followed the slight misalignment of the books — slightly off because the books were put back the wrong way; slightly off center because the chairs had been moved. Lily stated, "She has been here." As Lily spoke Dylan followed her gaze. "She reads fast," Dylan replied. "She doesn't have to read," Lily replied. "She simply needs to understand why people protect things."

I teased. "Of course, I do!" Lily placed her hands on her hips dramatically. "If it’s a baby boy, I’m going to teach him how to play soccer, and we’ll have races outside every day! I’ll show him how to climb trees, and we’ll build a treehouse together!" I laughed. "And if it’s a girl?" Lily’s eyes sparkled with excitement. "Then I’ll teach her how to braid hair! We’ll have tea parties, and we’ll dress up like princesses! Oh! And I’ll teach her how to sing and dance like me!"

Michael nodded thoughtfully. “Then maybe I’m not the only one who feels lost.” “No.” Adrian’s answer came without hesitation. “You are certainly not.” Across the building, Lily was helping Ava prepare a display featuring books about resilience and new beginnings. She carefully arranged each novel before stepping back. “This one looks crooked.” Ava adjusted it slightly. “There.” “Better.” Emily wandered over carrying another stack. “I found more.” Lily accepted them. “You’ve become very fast at finding books.” Emily smiled proudly.

She said that she wanted some now, and he said that it was bedtime, and she said that babka was breakfast and that breakfast was for morning, and he said that was logical, and I laughed. He went to tuck her in again, and I stayed in the kitchen and cleaned up the plates, and when he came back he was holding a book that Lily said was for me. He handed me the book, and it was a children's book about a hockey player and a baker who became friends, and inside the front cover Lily wrote in wobbly letters that this is you and Daddy and that she drew a picture of us holding hands.
