CHAPTER 39 Lily’s POV Warning: Violence It’s the girl on the video, the one who kissed Salvy. I covered my mouth and swallowed hard. I don’t want to vomit. She looks so different. She is wearing a collar and the collar is chained on the desk. She has bruises all over her body and her hair was a mess, some of it was even shaved off. She is staring at the ceiling lifelessly. I look at her chest for any motion and thank God, she is breathing but she doesn’t even blink. Valerius mentioned to me that they lost contact with her before the attack happened. That’s one of the main reasons why they don’t know where the brothers were and what the brothers were planning.

*Lily's P.O.V.* Getting entangled with those who lived in cruelty was a terrible circumstance. My chest heaves like my next breath would be my last—probably it would. I couldn't fight. Like a pawn in the game of power, I was nothing— absolutely nothing compared to those who wanted to show off how powerful they were. The danger I felt in their presence was extreme. Where the hell am I? I could hear the low hum of a car engine and feel the heat coming from it. Was that the Van Kylie talked about? Was I getting in there?

Lily POV After I heard the definitive click of the door’s lock, I immediately got to work. I tore at the tape covering my mouth, wincing as it pulled at my skin. Finally, I managed to peel it off, gasping for air. My mind raced as I tried to make sense of everything. Lucas hadn't taken me to Golden Moon as he'd said. We were somewhere isolated, somewhere no one would think to look. The packs were territorial—they rarely ventured far from their lands. If we were truly in neutral territory, as Lucas suggested, my chances of being found decreased dramatically.

“You are not becoming like him. You’re twelve years old. You’re supposed to be drawing butterflies and worrying about homework and playing with that damn puppy. Not this. Not violence. Not blood on your hands.” Lily’s lower lip trembled, the first crack in her armor since they had found her sitting calmly on the burning porch. “But I can’t, Ceddy. Because butterflies die. And homework doesn’t matter when bad men come to take you away. Only staying alive matters. Only keeping you and Mommy safe matters.”

He stepped away from her, crossing back to the other side of the library where his own book waited for him. Lily clutched the large hardcover he’d given her to her chest as she headed toward the door. She’d learned better than to push him. But when she reached the exit, she hesitated. Maybe she hadn’t learned her lesson after all, because try as she did to walk away from him, she couldn’t allow this moment to pass. She turned toward him. “The children,” she said. “Will, Hope, Noah. Are they yours?” * * *

The life force of nature vibrated up through the earth, through the dirt, through the moss and fallen leaves and every living thing I came into contact with, filling me up with wild, animal energy. And then I was at the highway. The road that led to the palace grounds was on the other side of the big, eight-lane throughway. A small, nagging human part of my mind wanted to slow and stop. Taking swift action, she tore a piece of cloth from a nearby shelf and used it to gag Liza's mouth, ensuring her voice remained silenced. Lily had let the last page of the book fall and she frowned, staring at the back leather cover. "I need a knife," she murmured to herself and searched her pockets, pulling out a small blade. She then gently sliced along the edge of the back cover, creating an opening. "Fuck me," she whispered and pulled out what looked like an old piece of parchment.
