LILY’S POV Groaning, I placed my palm on my head and winced as my eyes fluttered open carefully, trying to adapt to the lights in the afterlife but something was overly different. I was in my room and on my bed. How did this happen? Why am I here and not with the moon goddess? Multiple questions ran through my mind and no matter how much I pondered on these questions, I couldn’t place my finger on a single answer. My brain felt messed up and I closed my eyes and opened it back more times than I could count but I was still in my room and not in the afterlife.

“Then why did it take them?” Lily looked at Lucas. “To pay for the change.” “What change?” Elena demanded. The little girl whispered: “It erased me from your family.” Elena stared at her. Lily's body flickered. “And if we don't get those six million minds back before the countdown ends…” She began disappearing. Lucas grabbed her hand. “What happens?” Lily looked at him. Tears streamed down her face. “You forget I was ever here.”

I didn't protest when Remi volunteered to walk me home. But I felt a little disappointed that Lily didn't even reach out to me when I was leaving but I made her goodbye any way. Turns out she was staring at some mermaid pictures in her book. Like who buys mermaid books for children these days. Oh, that is so wrong.

Lily sighed — the last thing she needed was to spend all night trying to seduce a man who had lost his mind. Walking into the maze, she was immediately assaulted by a winged figure made and stone. In the real world, such a creature would have a fighting chance. Here, however, Lily was the Queen. She snapped her tail like a whip, cracking the stone figure in the head, shattering it into fluttering butterflies.

Because this was bigger than politics. This was physics. Divine physics. That night, Lily locked herself in the highest tower. Alone. She needed silence. Needed to feel it without anyone watching. She let the golden fire rise. Fully. It burst outward, filling the room in radiant light. Her wings manifested behind her — larger than before. Brighter. Too bright. They scraped the stone ceiling.
