Through the tear in the bag, I glimpsed distorted figures, their forms vague and threatening.
The footsteps halted in front of me. A voice, too familiar, pierced the silence. "You can quit pretending, Lily. I know you're awake."
My pulse quickened, but I stayed perfectly still, pretending as though I was still unconscious.
The voice persisted, dripping with disdain. "I hate lies and pretence, Lily. Quit the act and raise your head."
Still, I remained perfectly in one position, my heart pounding in my ears, drowning out the ominous voice. The unknown figure seemed insistent, demanding a response I was not ready to give.
