Maggie did not reply; she did not even hear him. Her entire self was fixed to the screen in front of her, with lips firmly pressed in a thin line. Her chest heaved expectantly under panting breaths, barely excluding glares that burnt bright, carrying in them the heat of pure, unadulterated wrath. Laura had made an abominable mistake without realizing it, and Maggie was bent on avenging it. She had reignited something inside Maggie. Something dark. Something dangerous. Something she had fought to bury for years. But now, it had clawed its way up from below and was completely unstoppable.

Thirty minutes later, a loud knock rattled the door and before Voss could even open it fully, Maggie stormed in like she was escaping a battlefield. She was freckled, curly-haired, wearing leggings, a blazer, and the exhausted confidence of someone who ruled a kingdom made of toddlers. When she spotted Layla, her eyes brightened. “Oh! So you’re the famous Layla.” Maggie beamed, pulling her into a warm, tight hug that smelled like baked goods and chaos. “I’ve heard so much about you!” Layla blinked, startled but smiling. “It’s really nice to finally meet you.” “Oh honey, likewise. Come sit. I made cookies. Ignore the ones in the bottom of the bag, they were used as bargaining chips.”

Are we going to pretend that she doesn't look exactly like the she-wolves from that pack,” Pi kept talking. “White-blonde hair and pale skin, plus she's exempt from my compulsion. She must be a descendant from that lot somehow.”
