There was a signboard of its club name by the entrance with a gothic font. What greeted him was a small reception with a girl sitting in front of the computer. She smiled when she saw him enter. "Good afternoon! What can I do for you?" she greeted, lifting her hands from the computer to attend to him. "I'd like to read something," Art replied, sliding his ID on the counter. The girl took one glance at it and smiled again before looking directly into his eyes. "The first floor books are all free for use and borrowing, but they contain limited information," she said. "You are one of the newcomers, right? If you don't have a club yet, consider joining ours."

“You think people would assume that?” “I mean… guy buys girl coffee at eight a.m., drives her somewhere, studies together. Yeah. They’d assume.” He laughed low. “Then coffee shop. Let ’em assume.” My stomach flipped. Shut up, stomach. We ended up at this little place downtown with big windows and mismatched chairs. He picked a corner table away from everyone. We spread out the notes, textbooks, highlighters. He started explaining the stupid aldol condensation like it was the easiest thing in the world, drawing arrows on my paper with his perfect handwriting.

There were neat, small sticky notes poking out from almost every single chapter. I opened to the first marked page. In Maverick’s handwriting, there was a note that read: “Does page 14 mean the data moves faster if you shorten the string? Let me know if I got that right.” I stared at the note, my heart feeling so light that I felt like a teenager again. I looked up at him, completely stunned. "Maverick... did you buy a coding textbook?"

Gwen's Pov I couldn’t stay in that apartment another minute. The package on the coffee table stared at me like a living accusation. Every time I glanced at it, fresh waves of humiliation crashed over me. I needed out. My Book club meeting was today. Right. As I perused the books, I could feel Aidan’s gaze on me. The shop, much like the one downstairs, boasted an impressive selection. These were books to be enjoyed in the coffee lounge, not purchased or taken home. A smile tugged at my lips as I reached the romance novel section. So, Well Thumbed had these too. I wondered if they had hidden gems, perhaps something I hadn’t read or that Uncle Alex’s book club, Bound To Please, hadn’t discovered yet.

"You stop reading because it feels like work instead of escape." "Exactly," I said, relieved that he got it without me having to explain. "I keep rereading the same pages and realizing I don't remember anything I just read." He smiled. "That's why book club helps. Other people keep you accountable. I’m part of a book club actually that started out in January. It’s just a dozen people, and we read different genres every week. But it’s so nice, and it helps to keep me accountable because without it, I won’t even read anything."
