I ask. "Oof, right into the heavy hitter questions." He glances over at me. "Sorry, I've never been great at small talk." "No," He pauses. "I like that. Let me think a moment." He looks straight ahead, and I can tell he's really thinking. Something about the way he takes his time is really attractive. "Don't tell anyone, but I keep a sort of journal." He says, almost laughing at himself. "I know it seems weird, and it's not like some dramatic thing, but I like to keep a log of important events in my life."

I simply sat on the bed, my eyes staring at the journal, the first entry, and the ultrasound, until I only saw stars. At the end, I picked the golden pen, it also came with the journal, and I wrote a letter in the space indicated for a name. It was a J. I didn't know what the initial stood for, but it didn't feel random, either. 'I love you, J.' I added, a silly smile playing on my lips. What did J even mean? Well, it didn't even matter. I liked it, that's all that mattered. After thinking over and over, I finally came up with a perfect place to keep the journal. I wanted something secure, and the hidden compartment in the closet sounded like a perfect choice.

I walked to my chair and brought out my journal to make my to-do list. First, I was going to open a business, a salon, perfume shop, or spa. I was going to figure it out, but the money I had was a lot, and I wasn’t about to waste it. Then I was going to send some to my parents and some to my siblings who were at school. Then I was going to pay off my loans, and finally I was going to get a better apartment. When I finished writing that, I suddenly started writing in my journal about this, from how it started to the whole scene.

He never pushed about time, and I never pushed about commitments. We were both satisfied and perfect with how things were going. But I'd started a notebook. A small one that fits in my bag. I told myself it was just for general notes but I know it wasn't. “Wedding ideas” written at the top of the first page in my handwriting. Underneath it I wrote, “Small. Private. People who actually matter.” Then: “Garden?” I hadn't shown it to Adrian yet or even mentioned it. I just carried it around and added things when they occurred to me.

“I think I’m still figuring out how to be soft and strong at the same time.” “You always were,” Chelsea said. “You just forgot for a while.” That night, Jeff surprised me with something small—but thoughtful. So why did I feel like I was forgetting something important? I hadn't written in it much lately, too caught up in work and usual the chaos. But this morning, I felt the need to write. To ground myself before everything changed,to reassure my self and be grateful. Things weren't perfect but it felt like if I wrote in this book, I would feel better even more free.

“Yeah. I’m trying out bullet journaling and I’m tired of all the blank pages.” Before I can respond, Nathan tears the passenger door open and throws himself in. “You’re supposed to fill the blank pages in with plans for your day, or your week… you know, that kind of thing. Not cute stickers.” “Journals can be filled with stickers as well. Tell him, Jenna,” Hallee demands. I shade in a tree. “Some people like stickers in their journals.” “See! I told you,” Hallee says triumphantly. “I think Jenna means some stickers with their plans for their day, not a journal dedicated to cute stickers. Otherwise, it’s not a journal, it’s a sticker book.”

“Fair enough. But if you change your mind, the offer’s there.” “Thanks,” I say, relaxing a little. The rest of the day passes in a blur of half-formed ideas and scribbled notes. I sit cross-legged on the couch with a notebook in my lap, jotting down random thoughts as they come to me. Themes, colors, emotions—everything goes on the page, no matter how messy or disconnected it feels. Calvin checks on me periodically, bringing snacks and water like some kind of domestic superhero. He doesn’t hover, though, which I appreciate. I need the space to let my brain do its thing.

She was just happy to be by his side. Eventually, they arrived at a small café on the corner of a busy street. The man led her inside and ordered two cups of coffee.
