Gockel’s 'I Bring the Fire' series, a modern urban fantasy where Loki is an alien being mistaken for a god. He’s morally ambiguous, driven by a mix of loneliness and a twisted honor code, and the slow-burn alliance with the human protagonist forces him into a more protective, if still dangerous, role.

These stories work because they tap into reader desire for characters who defy easy categorization—we want the cleverness and the rebellion without the cardboard evil. The best versions let Loki be charming, destructive, and strangely sympathetic all at once, often exploring how trauma and exclusion shape his chaos. You finish feeling like you’ve seen a fuller person behind the myth, tricks and all.
