He stepped through the gate like he was entering a contamination zone. The chickens immediately flocked to him, clucking and pecking at his shoes. He froze. “They’re just curious,” I said, biting back a smile. One of them—Rosie, the Rhode Island Red—hopped up onto a nesting box and tilted her head at him. Sebastian stared back. “You need to reach into the box and take the eggs,” I said. “I’m not putting my hand in there.” “Why not?” “Because I don’t know what’s in there.”

The crack began to widen. Everyone was elated to see this. It was what they came for: a phoenix was about to be born! Underneath the collective attention of the audience, a faint chirp emerged from underneath the shell. Before anyone could figure out what was happening, a pheasant's head popped out of the shell. "A pheasant? Where's the phoenix?!"

I grab what Ri'elle needs, then I race back up the hallway towards the west tower. "I have the lighter, the bowl, mixer, and sage." I tell Ri'elle as I walk in. Micheal and Ansel arrive a few moments later laden down with their first round of chickens. Ansel has 8 chickens each in one of the small cages, and Micheal has the portable pop up larger cage as well as 4 chickens. I take the pop up cage and quickly set it up.
