"I would have asked you that first night if I didn't think it would have scared you silly. Kimberly, I love you. There's never going to be anyone else for me. But I don't want to rush you. You've had a lot of change and adjustment in the past month. Don't stand there and think for one minute I don't want you. Elara's POV The library was larger than the entire servant quarters at Moonhowl. Shelves rose three stories high packed with more books than I had ever seen in one place. The scent of old paper and leather bindings filled the air. Sunlight filtered through tall windows casting pools of light across reading tables scattered throughout the space. It was magnificent. I stood at the entrance and felt something crack open inside my chest. All this knowledge. All these stories and histories and ideas and I could not read a single word.

“Days, maybe. The baby is connected to the moon phases in a curious way. A week from the next full moon is all the time you’ve got.” I swore out loud, raking my hand through my hair. The next full moon was three days off. Three long days to make a choice about whether or not I’d be willing to risk my pack for a child who wasn’t blood of my blood but was mine in very way that counted. I started to leave, the air in the den clotting my throat, but Mara’s voice stopped me in my tracks. “Choose carefully, Derrick. Power is a heavy crown, but love is heavier.”

As soon as we reach the pack house, I find Helena and the shock on her face when we tell her what we found out is also telling. She makes her way to one of the back shelves and pulls out a book that looks very old. Paging through it without a word, she frowns until she turns the book around. I read the passage she is pointing to and for a second wonder if this poor girl knows every passage of every book in the library. It must have been incredibly lonely for her before we came along. I look at Silas as he reads and he nods. The passage tells of a Lycan that took a young hunter hostage. They somehow ended up being destined mates and neither our kind of her family would accept it.

She explained to me before taking a couple of sips from her latte. “So, that’s why I was needed in the process too,” I commented as I watched her read the books while sipping her coffee, and I was fascinated by how engrossed she was in something that caught her interest. “Stop staring.” Without looking, she sensed my stare, making me chuckle before she went into serious mode again and talked about the Moonlight. “Also, to make the Moonlight technique work smoothly, the bond of trust must be deep, which mostly works around mates and rarely occurs among blood relatives or friends.”

One wanted more in the dead, silent heart of solitude, while the other aspired to something far beyond the severe commitments of loyalty and tradition.
