You do not understand what I am capable of.” Anger flashed in Bailey’s eyes. “I just helped you and you pushed me away?” “You do not understand,” I repeated coldly. “Leave it.” She lifted her chin with defiance. “Is this why they call you the Monster King?” I met her gaze and felt the weight of ten years press down on me. “No. They call me the Monster King because of what I did after I stopped fighting the monster.”

His expression hardened in that silent way that meant mechanisms were starting behind the eyes. “Where did it come from?” he asked. Zara didn’t answer at once. She turned the photograph in her fingers, watching the light play over the woman’s laugh, the fold of the shawl, the blur of the crowd. She had handled power and knives and the worst men in ten countries. This letter had made her small and thin in a way that nothing else had since she was a child. “It’s from M,” she said finally, and the name came like a stone thrown into calm water; ripples extended in all directions. “Who is M?”

~Author’s POV~ "This track is called the Serpent's Back. It's a narrow road that goes up a mountain. There's no fence. Just a big drop off the side. People have crashed here. One guy died last year," Simon said, his eyes shining with amusement. Harriet listened, but she didn't look scared. She was looking at her car, a simple silver Mazda. She touched it. It looked old, but she could tell it had been taken care of. The tires were good. The engine sounded smooth and strong.

He was like them. A monster..

It was massive. Vaulted ceilings stretched high above, with chandeliers that hovered without support. Murals of ancient creatures—phoenixes, leviathans, dragons—covered the walls, moving subtly as if alive. Wooden benches and arched windows lined the room. It felt more like a cathedral to magic than a classroom. Everyone here wore the same badge. I slipped into a seat beside a girl with eyes like molten silver and hair like liquid obsidian twisted into twin knots. She turned to me, smiling with sharp, inhuman teeth. “You’re the screamer.”

“Not a hug. A union. The Guardians’ power is strongest when bound together. One of you alone can wound a creature. Two of you can push it back. He shifts his gaze to me, lets it drop to the heavy ruby choker circling my neck. “It’s an albatross,” he mutters. I’m not sure I heard him right, but he continues, gesturing to the choker. “The things we do for money and status. And for what?” He drinks down his whiskey. “I’m sure Mom wasn’t thrilled about lending it to you, considering.”

A monster? The moment we step onto the grounds, the smell hits. It's the smell of copper and rot and something disgusting. My stomach lurches. Kira swears under her breath. Isaiah's jaw tightens as the backup soldiers fan out, their boots silent on the snow, their weapons drawn. Then the chanting reaches us. It's loud enough to vibrate in my bones. My hand rests on my stomach, my palm flattening over my bump on instinct. 'Please,' I think desperately. 'Please be okay.‘

That monsters actually kissed me again. *************

Thorny vines shot out of the woods and wrapped themselves around one of the monsters, trapping it but it wouldn't hold for long. The other two ran towards me with a speed I hadn't expected from monsters their size. Blasting them with my water magic didn't deter them, instead, it angered them further. They had almost gotten to me when the mist popped out six huge monsters, five of which immediately went into action. The winged monster didn't, instead, it trotted to me and nuzzled my cheek, making me smile. The Egran, which I had decided to name my monsters, fought with Karissa's scorpion-wolves with such speed that stunned the scorpion-wolves themselves at first.
