I looked over at the big clock in the corner of the parlor. It was 12:03 AM. It was past midnight. My mind started racing at a hundred miles an hour. If I called a public ambulance, it wouldn’t just be an ambulance. It would be cameras, whispers, breaking alerts. A bleeding Montclair heiress inside a Hawthorne property at midnight would not stay private for even an hour.

Instead, he took the opportunity to escape. Hannah crawled over to me. She checked my breathing. There was none. Hannah looked up. Once again, she saw that strange clock on the wall. She was a head shorter than me, but the energy she carried filled the hallway. “Hey there” she said cheerfully, waving her hand beside her head. “You’re actually in this time. I knocked twice before and thought maybe you’d disappeared or something.”

"What will you tell someone when they ask you again?" Her eyes widened when they met mine, and she turned stiff. I dropped my gaze after a few seconds. "Did you say you wanted more bread?" She narrowed her eyes and her forehead creased, trying to remember something, and then shook her head as if she was sleep deprived for days. "Yes, I said I would prefer the rustic bread to go with my soup." "Absolutely. I'll be right back." Such a sweetheart. I'd never hurt her. My thoughts drifted back to the crisis at hand. There would be about thirty minutes of darkness before the moon sets in the evening. And that's the same time Kian would be officially taking over the Storm Moon Pack.
