“You’ve made the right choice.” With the Grimoire in his hands and me now close to my sister, the Grimoire begins to tremble softly, reacting to our powers. Elizabeth looks at me with despair and I mouth to her how deeply sorry I am. I just don't want to lose anyone again. A thunderous blast of pitch-black smoke explodes from the Grimoire, pervading the entire place with haunting screeches and miasma. It surges ceaselessly, truncating all our senses and driving me crazy. I can hear the others screaming and feel Chestnut come awake amid the nightmare. I grip my head and bite my lip, doing my very best to evade the malevolent effect from Elizabeth and Chestnut as well.

For now, she didn't even want to wonder what would happen if aunt Margareth finds out about her feelings. Selene stretched first, then slowly dragged herself off the bed, her eyes immediately fixed on the Book of Magic that was lying down on the desk, the one she had gotten from aunt Meredith yesterday. Selene took it gently in her hands and sat on the edge of the bed, setting the bulky volume on her lap, and flipped through the book several times. Afer the fourth time she stopped at a page that showed a portrait of a man with ebony, half-length hair, in a long black coat... And with that, Magnus didn’t even move an inch from where he stood as I started to run away. I continued running. I even looked back to see him just watching me from afar silently. I could feel long strides then followed and I didn’t have to look back to see Owen was following me. “You run fast.” He commented.

My heartbeat drowned every warning in my head. That night, Magnus set his trap. At dinner, he lifted his goblet high, smirk curling, and announced, “Ash will accompany me on a private hunt. My son will remain behind.” My spine stiffened, but I nodded. Across the table, Zane didn’t protest. He only smirked lazily, pretending obedience. Magnus, smug in his victory, never noticed the way his son’s golden eyes gleamed like fire ready to devour.

Uneven. Knocks sound loudly against the bathroom door, but neither of us moves. Neither of us cares. How did he find me? Did he follow me? Questions race wildly through my mind all at once. “I know what Magnus did to you, Kitten.” Chase’s voice comes softer now. Shaky. Loaded with emotion. I still completely at the mention of Magnus. Dread floods me instantly. “I watched what he did to you…How he almost raped you…” Chase swallows hard. “I watched how you fought…” His voice thickens painfully with emotion.

He was so close to her now and not only could she smell the faint scent of his cologne, but she could feel the heat radiating from his body. No, she immediately snapped of whatever spell he had on me. Her senses seemed to come back to her as she took a step back. She needed him far away. Even though his touch felt soothing, she still needed to escape. She thought she had the courage to do this before, but she just couldn’t. She couldn’t let a stranger defile her. A man she hardly knew to take away the one thing she owned. Evie grabbed the bra from beneath me and dashed for the door. But he caught her wrist. His touch sending sparks down her spine.

I unzip my school bag and place the book inside. ‘W-what are you doing, Magnus? You can’t take the book. It would be -s-stealing.’ ‘I’m just borrowing it for now. I’ll return it once we break the curse, okay?’ ‘I guess.’ ‘Time to get out of here.’ I say. We blow the candles out and open the door ajar. Once the coast is clear, I walk out and distract the librarian again with more flirting while Pipsqueak locks up the room and returns the keys.

I repeat for clarity. "Absolutely, Isabella. I promised." I'm not a fan of the sly look Avery flashes me afterward, but I decide to let it slide for now instead of probing further. "Get ready to eat your words, Carter," I tell her as I snatch her tablet away. "Don't count your chickens yet, Vega. You've got a long way to go. Did I mention that After is part of a five-book series? Oops." Now I understand what was making me uneasy before.

Vivienne stood in the dark for fifteen seconds, counting her heartbeats, assessing whether that had been specific knowledge or a general performance for the building's benefit, Isla's version of shouting into the dark to see what was called back. She couldn't be certain. Which meant she needed to assume the worst, and accelerate everything, and get to Magnus before dawn. She moved through the junction fast and silent and didn't stop moving until the chapel's stone walls were around her and the documents were in Magnus's hands and the night outside was beginning, almost imperceptibly, to lighten at its edges. Magnus read the documents in silence.
