A thick, weathered book lay open before her, its yellowed pages vibrating slightly. She spoke in a low, melodic voice: “Estra me seish kruel. Estes ses seish kruel. Hillma re kuvena celin. Oshrma celin.” The candles flickered wildly, and the air in the room grew colder. ‘That’s black magic!’ Naila’s voice rang sharply in my mind. I stiffened. ‘How do you know that?’ ‘It’s written on the book’s spine. That’s a forbidden spellbook.’

Her mansion is purely vintage. The walls are bookshelves overcrowded with books, even the lengthy table in the middle of this space is occupied with books and blueprints of magic—just like how messy a mage could be. I laid the carrier on the table, silently, observing her motions that might seem alarming while she's performing enchantment to Hedwelch and Danteleon.

Unzipping my bag, I hand her the book of spells and hexes. ‘Magnus, where did you get this? Do you know how much trouble we can get into for having this?’ ‘Yeah, I know. Well, Meguitte had her magic. Low and urgent. I unlock the door and Kaleb steps inside. He’s carrying a stack of leather-bound books that smell of dust and centuries-old magic. He kicks the door shut behind him and locks it again. "I emptied the restricted section," he says, dumping the books onto the rocking chair. "Everything we have on blood magic, binding rituals, and the Faction history." "Did anyone see you?" I want to believe that the pack will always be loyal to their Alpha, but who knows what Madilyn is capable of.

Elaine spoke the words down into the glass; the magic seemed to hear her, and as she gave a tug, the lid lifted. The book beneath the glass peered through Elaine. The volumes’ binding was smooth leather, and the stitching was gold. Long, smooth letters were intricately painted across the front, and her hand brushed them softly. It was the most precious book in the world. Reaching down, she pulled it out and flipped to the page she desired. There it was in thick black letters, the word luck. The pages of the book were filled with names and places, a guide to every gifted being in the land. It was centuries old and was only written on by the top magistrate himself, the king’s second in command

“I would sense the magic if it were so.” I dismounted and unsaddled Coryfe as the mage sat on one of the branches of the fallen tree and drew from a bag he wore under his cloak, a small book, bound in leather, with curls of metal protecting the corners and clasping the covers shut. “We need a fire,” he said to me, his fingers stroking the cover reverently. There was no writing on the cover or binding, but I could see something had been embossed into the leather. Perhaps the embossing was the shadow of writing that had once been picked out with ink, but which time had faded or flaked away.
