Two hundred Alphas watch, Caiden on his knees, the High Priestess pale, the dead witch’s body still smoking.
I look up. The mountain waits.
I step inside, and darkness swallows me whole. The gate slams shut, cutting Draven’s roar off, and the boy is gone.
I’m alone. Then I hear her breathing, wet and slow like river water. “You killed my youngest,” the voice says, coming from the walls, the floor, inside my teeth.
A torch flares. The cave is huge, walls carved with names, thousands scratched out except one.
A woman sits on a throne of bones. No chains, no guards. Her hair is white, her skin is stone, her eyes gone, sewn shut with silver thread.
