I paused for just a fraction of a second, resting the heavy stone against my thigh to straighten my violently throbbing lower back. CRACK. The deafening snap of a heavy leather whip bit into the wheelbarrow mere inches from my boots, showering my legs in wet gravel. "Hey! He doesn't even look like someone who even read books. Shaking my head off the thought of him, I focused my whole attention on the book. Smiling like a fool as I read the dialogue between the main character and her love interest. Her story wasn't much different from mine. She was a slave in his manor also, but she was sharp-witted with a sharp tongue, not failing to speak up when she feels so wronged. I wish I could do the same, but I feel like Master Darren would crack my bones if I tried it.
