What works for me is leaning into the physical proximity the rooftop meetings allow, but undercutting it with the knowledge that they’re lying to each other every second. Have Chat Noir lean in a little too close while making a joke, and have Marinette’s internal monologue scream because she knows Adrien is right there in her room, but she can’t say it. The best tension comes from the reader knowing more than either character, so every casual touch or shared laugh is layered with dramatic irony. It’s agonizing in the best way.

Another trick is using their respective pressures. Marinette is stressed about keeping her secret and being Ladybug; Chat is lonely and puts on a brave face. When they meet, that’s the one place those pressures could lift, but they can’t fully let go. So you write scenes where Marinette almost confesses out of sheer exhaustion, or Chat drops the flirty act for a second and looks genuinely vulnerable, only to snap back into character. The space between what they show the world and what they almost reveal to each other on that rooftop—that’s where the tension lives. It’s a tightrope walk of almost-moments.

Weirdly enough, I don't go for the 'love at first sight' angle when the masks are off; the fics that stick with me are the ones where they fight first. Not physically, but that initial clash where he's a showboating flirt and she's defensive and sharp, their whole dynamic is built on mutual annoyance that's secretly fascination. That friction is the good stuff. The best trope, for my money, is the 'accidental vulnerability' moment—maybe Chat catches Marinette crying over something unrelated and his entire persona drops, or she sees him exhausted after a fight and offers him a croissant without even thinking. It's not grand; it's small, human, and it cracks the shell.

I also have a soft spot for the identity shenanigans, obviously, but not the big reveal. I mean the little almost-moments that drive you crazy, where one of them says something suspiciously specific or uses a turn of phrase only the other persona would know, and they both just brush it off. The tension of them being so close to figuring it out, yet so stubbornly blind, is a special kind of torture that I absolutely love reading.

The Marichat dynamic always felt like the realest version of their connection to me. It’s stripped of the superheroics and the celebrity crush, just two people who can be awkward and genuine with each other. Fics that lean into sin often use that rawness to explore guilt in a way the other squares can’t. Ladybug might feel guilty about endangering civilians, but Marinette, in that alley with Chat, feels guilty for wanting something just for herself, for indulging a fantasy with the ‘wrong’ boy. The emotional conflict isn’t just about cheating on Adrien; it’s about Marinette betraying her own idealized self-image.

That self-betrayal gets super messy when the sin is physical. A stolen kiss isn’t just a kiss; it’s Marinette actively choosing to step outside the neat, controlled future she’s mapped out. The aftermath in good stories isn’t just ‘oh no, what have I done,’ but a deep unraveling. Can she even look at Adrien the same way now that she knows what it feels like to let go with someone else? The tension comes from her trying to stuff the genie back in the bottle, to rationalize the Chat-shaped crack in her perfect world, and often failing spectacularly.
