The pain dulled to a throb. The Mark went quiet. He looked at my shoulder. Then at my mother. Something unreadable passed through his eyes. “This ritual is unfinished,” Mother Elara said quickly. “The seal has not—” “End it,” the man said. Two words. Absolute. Armed men flooded the chamber. The Elders shouted. Someone tried to run. They didn’t make it far. I couldn’t look away from him. From the way the candles flickered when he moved. From the way the Mark under my skin pulsed faintly, like it recognized him.

Connor said as he turned me around and kissed me hard with hunger. "Maybe tonight, Aaron has Mark, so," I said as I looked up into Connors sky blue eyes. "I don't like the fact of Aaron having Mark; we need to do something about that and quickly. I wish Aaron were one of those deadbeat fathers who never showed their faces around their children. That would make things so much easier," Connor said as he bent down and kissed my forehead. "After everything that has happened, I somewhat wish that as well, but Aaron is his father. Aaron adores Mark, so I don't see him hurting Mark in any way," I spouted the half-truth that I'm no longer confident in believing.

I stepped closer, lowering my voice “—I know you’re good. You know you’re good. But there’s stuff you could tighten up. It’s not a bad thing.” Tyler shook his head. “You sound just like him.” “Ty—” “Forget it,” he said, grabbing his stick and heading for the locker room. In the tunnel, Markus was leaning against the wall, scrolling his phone. He looked up when I passed. “Mason,” he said, like we were old friends. “Got a minute?” “Not really.” He ignored that, falling into step beside me. “You saw it too, didn’t you? The gaps in his positioning.”

Against the back of the wall stood a huge choir. Suddenly, a young man, maybe 20, with long, flowing black hair, dressed in a tux, strutted proudly onto the stage. He cut right through the aisle of performers, heading for the center. As he did, the entire audience rose to its feet and applauded. “Who’s he?” I asked. He reached the center and bowed repeatedly, smiling. Even from up here, I could see that he was startlingly attractive. “Sergei Rakov,” Jonah answered. “He’s one of the best vocalists in the world.”
